The man charged with abducting and sexually assaulting a little girl near Oshawa last week appeared for a bail hearing in a Peterborough, Ont., courtroom Monday.

Stanley Tippett's court appearance lasted less than five minutes before he was remanded into custody. He will be back in court on Thursday, CTV Toronto's John Musselman said.

Tippett, 32, was arrested in Manvers Township on August 6. Police were investigating after a 12-year-old girl was allegedly abducted from a Peterborough street and sexually assaulted behind a school in Courtice, just east of Oshawa.

The girl had just left a birthday party and was reported missing at about 1:30 a.m. Residents heard her screaming for help behind the high school about 50 minutes later.

When officers arrived at the school, a red van was seen fleeing the scene. The van was later found abandoned in Oshawa. Tippett was arrested in a vehicle between Oshawa and Peterborough several hours later.

Tippett, who covered his face with his shirt and shouted he was "not guilty" as guards escorted him into court on Monday, has been convicted in the past for harassing and stalking women, Musselman said. Tippett's wife, mother, and five children were in court on Monday.

"I'm not supporting him. I'm not posting bail. He's not welcome back in the family home any more," his wife, Natalie Tippett, told reporters outside the courtroom.

Tippett's ten-year-old son, Ryan, also read a statement his mother helped prepare.

"Don't ever talk to me again and never call me your son again," he said.

Musselman said the woman Tippett was allegedly having an affair with was also in court.

"She sat in the front row right beside Tippett's wife," Musselman said.

"We tried to speak to her afterwards. All she would say is that her life has been destroyed by what has happened."

In addition to the abduction and sexual assault charges, Tippett is also facing breach of probation and dangerous driving charges. News reports shortly after Tippett's arrest claimed he had called his wife shortly before his arrest and told her his minivan had been carjacked at gunpoint.
