Homicide detectives are investigating after a 33-year-old man was shot and killed on a street in Richmond Hill on Monday night.
York Regional Police say they were called to Barnwood Drive, in the Bayview Avenue and Old Colony Road area, at 9:30 p.m. for several reports of gunshots heard.
They arrived to find a man suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to a hospital trauma centre where he was pronounced dead.
Police later identified him as Soheil Rafipour.
“My understanding is the victim was getting into a vehicle and at that point a suspect vehicle approached and a shooting occurred,” Const. Laura Nicolle said.
A witness told CP24 the man was shot in the chest, but police would not confirm that.
Officers say one witness spotted several suspects fled the scene in a dark-coloured SUV.
“We’re doing a canvas in this neighbourhood with officers going door to door asking if anyone saw anything or heard anything,” Const. Laura Nicolle said.
Investigators had taped off and were seen photographing a red Chevrolet Corvette coupe parked on the street near the crime scene.
A police mobile command trailer was also brought to the scene.
Nicolle said that investigators were not treating the shooting as a random incident.
