An 18-year-old man is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder, after two police officers were injured during a pursuit in downtown Toronto earlier this month.

According to police, a suspect in a vehicle was pulled over on Baldwin Street just west of Spadina on Oct. 1 when he suddenly took off.

The two officers who had pulled the suspect over sustained an arm and leg injury as a result of the vehicle abruptly driving away from them.

The officers then pursued the vehicle and followed the suspect south on the Spadina Avenue streetcar tracks. Eventually, the suspect turned right onto King Street before making a U-turn to proceed east on King Street.

Police said the suspect then drove directly at one of the officers, striking him and knocking him to the ground. They said the responding officer’s bicycle was run over as the suspect fled the scene heading south on Spadina Avenue once again.

In a news release Tuesday, police saidan arrest was made in the investigation on Oct. 6.

A suspect identified as Toronto resident Kulvir Singh Bhatia has been charged with attempted murder, possession of marijuana, escaping lawful custody, two counts of failure to stop after an accident, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and driving a motor vehicle without a license.

He is scheduled to appear in court sometime Tuesday afternoon.

Anyone with information about the investigation is being asked to call police at 416-808-1900 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
