TORONTO - Sometimes persistence doesn't pay off.

Alan Williams of Pefferlaw, Ont., won just shy of $16 million in Wednesday's Lotto 6/49 draw -- but not with the numbers he'd picked for seven years in a row.

The 73-year-old retired construction worker bought his winning ticket on the spur of the moment and let the computer pick the numbers for him.

When, like clockwork, he checked his ticket against the winning numbers just before going to bed he was "stunned" to see that all six matched.

After a sleepless night, Williams and his wife were driven by their two sons to Toronto to collect the cheque.

Williams, who has been married for 49 years, says he will use the money to take care of his family, and maybe plan a trip to Birmingham, England, where he and his wife grew up.
