The Ontario SPCA is investigating after two traumatized kittens were found, each with one eye gouged out.

Dr. Gabrielle Herman, from the Bay Cat Hospital, told CTV Toronto's Austin Delaney that despite their injuries the cats still trusted staff as they were nursed back to health.

"It looks like someone had traumatized them first then taken something like a ballpoint pen and tried to pull out their eyes," Herman said.

"The eyes were actually protruding from their heads with swelling and something had stabbed into the centre of their eye ball."

Herman says the kittens, siblings and about 14-weeks-old, were found about a week ago by the agency in a dumpster near Yonge and Bloor Streets. She says she believes they were kicked in the head.

She added that staff also had to remove tooth fragments from the mouth of one of the felines.

Herman expressed outrage at the way the male and female cats were treated.

"I can't imagine what kind of person could take innocent animals and do something like that," she said.
