The last time the "King of Bollywood" appeared in Toronto, the downtown core was overrun by screaming, cheering fans who broke into tears out of sheer joy and excitement.

Fans of Shah Rukh Khan, also called SRK, didn't disappoint on Wednesday night when he returned to this city to promote his latest film.

A fan frenzy greeted Khan's afternoon arrival at Pearson International Airport to try and catch a glimpse of the Indian film star.

He tweeted the following about 12 hours earlier from London's Heathrow Airport: "Outside heathrow smoking & coffeeing. Cold against my face. toronto bound.I feel like a wanderer...free..now I know why its called a release."

King Khan, considered Indian cinema's Brad Pitt, will attend the opening of his 3D movie "Ra.One" at the downtown TIFF Bell Lightbox at 7 p.m.

In the Hindi superhero movie, Khan plays a family man trying to connect with his son by creating a bizarre video game.

Khan last appeared in Toronto during the International Indian Film Academy awards in June, a massive show which drew tens of thousands of tourists to the Toronto area.

During that trip, Khan met with Mayor Rob Ford, Premier Dalton McGuinty and later sent fans into a frenzy by breaking into dance in the Royal York Hotel foyer.

Khan tweeted Monday about his return to Toronto, saying he was excited to return to the city and that he had fond memories of his last visit.
