Police say they have arrested a janitor at Toronto's St. Joseph's College School after he allegedly cut a gas line in an attempt to blow up the school.

Police said they were called to the all-girls boarding school Thursday at 7:50 a.m. to deal with a reported gas leak.

A strong smell of gas in the school led a staff member to pull the fire alarm and evacuate the students, police said.

Police allege that the janitor cut the line and then went to a kitchen area in the school and assisted kitchen staff in lighting the stove.

There were no injuries to staff or students.

Vincent Perna, 67, is facing a number of charges, including break and enter, mischief endangering life, attempted murder and attempted arson.

He appeared in a Toronto court Friday morning.
