A student from Jamestown is getting a scholarship to university after overcoming the struggles of living in a low income neighbourhood.
Hafeezat Ameen is one of 40 students who was recently awarded an Investing in Our Diversity scholarship from Toronto Community Housing.
Ameen, who is in Grade 12, said she would not be limited by her surroundings. She works as a tutor and at Tim Hortons to make money to help support her family.
She will be one of two women in the mining engineering program at Laurentian University.
The $4,000 scholarship is the only way she could afford to attend university.
“There’s a lot of help, but the help won’t come to you. I had to apply for the scholarship. I had to apply for bursary. I had to do good in school,” Ameen said.
She hopes her story will inspire others.
“They need someone to remind them that they are worth more and they can do good,” she said.
