TORONTO - A day after getting no-hit, the Toronto Blue Jays had Jose Bautista and Aaron Hill back in the lineup.

It didn't make much difference.

Austin Jackson hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh inning Sunday as the Detroit Tigers downed the struggling Toronto Blue Jays 5-2.

While Bautista did his thing, hitting a two-run shot of his own against Brad Penny in the third inning, the Toronto Blue Jays could muster little else.

Hill, who returned from a hamstring injury, was 1-for-4, but Adam Lind and his 27 RBIs was nursing a tight lower back and did not play.

"Obviously Jose steps right back in, gives us a quality at-bat with a two-run homer," Blue Jays manager John Farrell said. "I thought Aaron swung the bat well with the base hit and still trying to get some consistent timing going. Those two, it's good to see them back in the lineup.

"Other than that, we were unable to string many quality at-bats together and really didn't have many opportunities to bunch some hits together or try to generate much offence."

Jo-Jo Reyes (0-3), who took the loss for Toronto, has not won in the major-leagues in his past 25 starts.

"I made three mistakes in this game and they cost me," Reyes said. "I think I commanded the bottom of the zone pretty good until I made three mistakes.

"I just got to take the positive out of today. Minus the line I thought I threw the ball pretty well."

It was the second win in a row for the Tigers, who got a no-hitter from ace Justin Verlander in Saturday's 9-0 triumph. The Blue Jays will try for a split Monday in the fourth game of the series.

While Penny (3-3) didn't pitch a no-no on Sunday, he didn't need to against the Blue Jays.

He said his fastballs might have looked like changeups to the Blue Jays after facing Verlander's fastball that reached 101 miles per hour late in Saturday's game.

"They're a real aggressive team," Penny said. "They were swinging at the first and second pitch and fortunately I got a lot of ground balls that went right to the defence."

He held the Blue Jays to seven hits and two runs in 7 2-3 innings. Jose Valverde struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his seventh save of the season and the 200th of his career.

Bautista gave the Blue Jays at 2-0 lead when Penny was still having trouble making his sinker behave. But before Bautista homered, Corey Patterson hit into a double play after two singles, leaving Rajai Davis at third as the only base runner.

"I was just trying to get a good pitch to hit all game long," said Bautista, who was back in the lineup after suffering neck spasms. "He missed his location, I don't think he was trying to go middle-up and I was able to take advantage."

Reyes couldn't hold the lead and allowed eight hits and five runs in seven innings. He has not won in the majors since June 13, 2008, when he beat the Los Angeles Angels as a member of the Atlanta Braves.

"There's progress being made," Farrell said. "He's gaining confidence with his fastball."

The Tigers scored two in the fourth -- one on a double by Victor Martinez and the other on Jhonny Peralta's single.

Jackson, who finished 3-for-5 and also had three hits Saturday, hit his second homer of the season with Brandon Inge aboard to put Tigers ahead 4-2 in seventh.

The Tigers scored again in the eighth against after Reyes surrendered a leadoff double by Magglio Ordonez. Jason Frasor replaced Reyes and allowed Miguel Cabrera's run-scoring single.
