Police are trying to determine how a 25-year-old man ended up in a ditch beside Highway 400 in north Toronto with serious head injuries.

Passing motorists phoned police at about 9:30 p.m. on Thursday when they saw the victim lying on the ground near the Finch Avenue exit.

"We had a report about a person in the ditch, a body rolling around in the ditch," said Ontario Provincial Police Const. Dave Woodford.

"We responded and found this male, with no vehicle around."

Officers found the young man wearing only a T-shirt and pants suffering from severe head injuries. He was taken to Sunnybrook hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Investigators say the man's injuries are consistent with someone who jumped out of a moving vehicle or was thrown from one.

After they made the discovery, officers found the man's vehicle idling in the driveway of his Toronto home. He had also failed to show up to the Toronto gas station where he worked on Thursday night.

Police believe they may be dealing with an abduction case.

Investigators say they won't be able to interview the victim for several days because of his condition.

Earlier this week, Toronto police swarmed an east-end neighbourhood after a man was found with his hands bound on the street with a gun steps away from him. He had been beaten up.

The victim alleged he had been held at a home on Logan Avenue in Riverdale on Tuesday night, one block from where he was found. He claimed he had been kidnapped and was going to be killed.
