Several hundred mourners grieved Friday at a funeral for a Vaughan boy who died in a high speed car crash along with his friend this week.

Niko Di Iorio, 15, was a passenger in his friend's Volkswagen Jetta when the car slammed into a tree on Keele Street south of Lloydtown-Aurora Road Monday.

Ryan Sheridan, 17, who was driving, also died in the crash. An unidentified third boy who was in the back seat is expected to recover.

Police say high speed was a factor, but do not believe the boys were street racing.

Di Iorio's friends sat he was a gifted soccer player. Teammates from the Vaughan Azzurri escorted his casket outside the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Parish in Woodbridge Friday morning.

Di Iorio's family owns a towing company, and more than 100 tow truck drivers from across the GTA paid their respects by slowly forming a procession behind the hearse. A truck filled with colourful flowers kept pace just ahead of the casket.

Mourners said Di Iorio's sister gave a moving eulogy.

"She gave a very touching speech. It was kind of hard to be there," one man said.

One tow truck driver said he was there to support the family in their time of pain.

"It's a loss of words," he said, taking several seconds to gain his composure.

Di Iorio was buried next to his cousin Matthew Di Iorio, who also died in a car crash in Mississauga in 2004.

Sheridan and Di Iorio's deaths marked the second recent road-related tragedy to strike their schoolmates at St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School in Vaughan.

Only weeks before, Grade 12 student Steven Seixeiro, 17, was hit by a truck and killed.

He was one of the 14 people killed in a rash of pedestrian deaths in the GTA in January.
