York Regional Police are investigating following the discovery of human remains in a wooded area in Markham.

Police were called to the area near Treeline Court in Markham at about 12:25 p.m. after a man walking through the woods spotted the body, they said Wednesday in a news release.

The Ontario coroner's office, along with York homicide and forensic identification officers, are involved in the investigation.

They are currently working on properly excavating the remains.

They don't know how long the body has been there, although the remains are described as decomposed.

At this point, investigators aren't sure if the remains are those of a man or a woman, although they suspect the person is an adult, police told CTV News.

Once the body has removed from the scene, it will be taken for a forensic examination.

At that point, they hope to determine the person's identity and cause of death, police said.
