A house fire in Etobicoke late Sunday night killed one person and has left another in hospital.

Fire crews were called to 73 Humber College Blvd., near Finch Avenue West and Martin Grove Road, just after 11 p.m. Sunday evening.

They quickly put out the two-alarm fire, which appeared to originate on the second floor near the "rear bedroom area" of the home, Toronto Fire Chief Bill Stewart said.

Firefighters pronounced the victim dead at the scene. His name has not been released and Stewart said his age remains unknown.

Five people made it out of the house on their own. One was suffering from severe smoke inhalation and burns to his face and hands. Two others were treated for smoke inhalation.

From his backyard, neighbour Bob Marjadsingh said he could see "flames coming out the windows" of the building. But he didn't hear any smoke alarms.

"We don't have too much to say to them -- it was mostly ‘hi' and ‘bye' -- but it was pretty sad to see the house go," Marjadsingh said.

On Monday morning, Toronto Police Det. Ken Lee said the injured man was transferred from Etobicoke General Hospital to Sunnybrook Hospital. There was no word on his condition.

The building appeared to be a rooming house for students. Firefighters remained at the scene at noon on Monday trying to determine the cause of the blaze.

Lee said police do not suspect a "criminal element."
