TORONTO - The operators of Highway 407 have officially announced a four-year, $40 million rewards program for frequent users of the toll road.

Every month, eligible customers can receive up to 140 free kilometres on Saturdays and Sundays, and can save up to nine cents per litre on the price they pay for gas.

Sources who revealed the program to The Canadian Press last weekend said it's part of a deal the provincial government reached last March with 407 ETR to settle a nasty legal dispute over rising toll levels.

The highway operator says more than 100,000 customers are eligible for the savings and it expects to offer more than 40 million free kilometres on weekends to its more frequent customers in 2007.

To be eligible, drivers must not have an outstanding balance greater than 35 days on their account and travel more than an average of 400 kilometres per month during a qualifying six-month period.

There are four tiers of rewards and customers will be reassessed every six months to determine who should be in the program and who should move up a tier.

The first tier applies to drivers who travel 1,500 or more kilometres each month on the highway. They will be eligible for 140 free kilometres on Saturdays and Sundays, in addition to savings on gasoline.
