A stretch of Highway 401 in Mississauga has re-opened after overnight construction continued past its expected end time of 9 a.m. and caused traffic chaos in both directions until the early afternoon on Sunday.

The highway was closed from Hurontario Street to Mavis Road until about 2:30 p.m., when construction crews completed the planned removal of the old Hurontario Street bridge.

Many drivers became frustrated with the long delays and attempted to turn around on the highway, according to Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Dave Woodford.

Eastbound lanes were detoured to Mavis Road, south to Britannia Road, east to Hurontario Street and north onto Highway 401.

Westbound traffic was detoured to Hurontario Street, north to Courtneypark Drive East, west to Mavis Road and south back onto the highway.
