A high-speed police chase involving a stolen truck ended in the vehicle smashing into an SUV and careening over a guardrail near Burlington, Ont., Tuesday evening.

Police said that a man was driving a truck westbound on the Queen Elizabeth Way highway in the high-occupancy vehicle lane, just before Guelph Line.

A police cruiser started tailing him because he appeared to be the lone person in a lane reserved for vehicles carrying passengers.

Police determined the truck was stolen and began a pursuit.

Rather than pulling over, the driver sped up to around 120 km/h, police said.

The truck started riding the shoulder and then accelerated to 140 km/h while crossing all lanes of traffic to the other shoulder.

Police said the truck exited northbound on Brant Road and then continued onto North Service Road.

Police lost the truck for a short time, but by the time they caught up, the truck driver had lost control and collided with an SUV.

Both the truck and the SUV ended up in the ditch, with the truck jumping the guardrail before catching fire.

Fire crews extinguished the blaze and the driver of the truck was arrested at the scene.

OPP said the truck driver faces pursuit and stolen vehicle charges.

The woman driving the SUV was helped from her vehicle, but neither one of the drivers was seriously injured in the crash.
