UPDATE: Documents obtained by CTV News Toronto show the charges against the accused were withdrawn in 2013.

A high school teacher has been charged with assault after he allegedly grabbed a female student by the throat and punched her in the face.

The alleged incident happened at Monsignor Fraser College near Ossington Avenue and College Street on April 15.

Police allege the victim had gone to see the teacher outside of class time when the incident happened.

The teacher has been placed on paid leave, according to the Toronto Catholic District School Board.

Ferdinando Marrello, 57, of Toronto, was arrested Wednesday and has been released until a June 5 court appearance.
