A 19-year-old man was charged Wednesday night in Hamilton after police responded to reports that a man at a park was wielding a butcher’s knife.

Around 8 p.m., Hamilton police received multiple reports saying a man was talking about hurting someone while holding a large butcher’s knife at JC Beemer Park. The park is located near Victoria Avenue North and Wilson Street, just east of the Beasley neighbourhood.

A number of adults and small children ran out of the park, according to police. The man tried to leave the area when he heard police had been called.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found a suspect in an alleyway directly beside the park. He was arrested and a knife was taken away.

Hamilton resident Dwayne Anthony Jr. Wilson was charged with possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose and failure to comply with his probation. Police said they have opposed Wilson’s bail.
