BARRIE -- A section of Highway 11 just north of Barrie was closed in both directions Tuesday night because of a crash and gas leak.

Police say a car drove off the southbound lanes into an abandoned motel causing around six o'clock, causing the gas leak.

Emergency officials have closed the northbound and southbound lanes as they deal with the aftermath of the crash and as the gas company tries to repair and cap the leak.

Provincial police say that the roof of the abandoned building has collapsed and that gas levels are "extremely high" in the area.

A number of nearby businesses have been evacuated, including a popular service centre in the southbound lanes.

The condition of the person in the vehicle that crashed is not clear and emergency workers say the highway will be closed for "several hours."
