A four-year-old boy has died after a fire broke out in a garage filled with flammables near Base Borden on Tuesday.

The blaze started around noon in a shed located behind a residence on a remote country road west of Base Borden.

Brian Wilson, 4, reportedly wandered away from his parents and became trapped in the building.

Volunteer firefighters arrived on the scene and rescued the still-breathing child from the burning garage.

The firefighters arrived without air tanks and managed to pull the boy from the flames.

"They knocked down the fire, majority wise, with the on-scene water. We had garden hoses and they had buckets of water," Adjala-Tosorontio Fire Chief Paul Boissonneault told CTV News.

The boy was rushed to hospital in Alliston, Ont., a fifteen minute drive from the scene, where he later died of his injuries.

The mother's boyfriend sustained burns to his arms and hands after a failed attempt to rescue the boy from the flames and toxic smoke.

According to a weathered sign on the property, the residence was a former daycare.

Police don't believe the daycare was in operation and no other children were on site during the blaze.

Brian's two brothers were at school.

The Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the death, but says it's too early to determine if charges will be laid.
