Brockville said its goodbyes to a young local woman who moved to the big city and died in a hail of gunfire as she had a cigarette outside an east Toronto tavern.

The funeral service for Bailey Zaveda, 23, was held Saturday at St. John Bosco Parish Centre in Brockville. She will be buried at St. James Cemetery in Ballycanoe, about 15 kilometres west of Brockville, at a later date.

Hundreds of people attended, all with the same sentiment -- it was a tragic and senseless death.

"It shouldn't happen," said Christine Farrow, a family friend. "These kids should not have to put up with this and should be able to walk around the streets without a fear of being shot or stabbed. It's just not right."

Another friend remembers someone full of life and happiness.

"I know she was working pretty hard at school, she's mentioned that a few times," said Christina Deryke. "I know she was a great girl. Very caring."

Some of Zaveda's friends who couldn't make it out to Brockville lit candles and laid flowers on the spot where she died. "

"We knew her and loved her and weren't able to make it to Brockville, so this is our tribute to Bailey, our friend," said Joanne,  a friend. A second woman added through sniffles: "This city needs to know ... she wasn't just a number."

At 12:50 a.m. on Oct. 25, Zaveda had stepped outside the main doors of the Duke of York tavern at 1225 Queen St. E. in Leslieville -- a bar marked with a mural of John Wayne on the outside holding a lever-action rifle.

At the same time, a verbal dispute between two men escalated to lethal levels.

One man pulled out a semi-automatic pistol and started firing at his fleeing opponent. A bullet struck Zaveda. She died on the spot, becoming Toronto's 60th homicide victim of 2008.

The bullets shattered the glass doors of the tavern. Bullets struck four people inside, including the rival.

Last Tuesday evening, Kyle Weese, 24, surrendered himself to police after an intensive three-day manhunt. He has been charged with one count of second-degree murder and four counts of attempted murder. One of the individuals struck by a bullet is Matthew Weese, 23, Kyle's brother.

Kyle is being held in custody and will have a video-linked bail hearing on Nov. 7.
