SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - Former Anishinabek police chief Glen Bannon has been sentenced to a year in jail.

Bannon, who served as chief from 1994 to 2004, had pleaded guilty to breach of trust and accepting secret commissions.

Court heard he accepted commissions totalling $140,000 between 1999 and 2004 from a Sault Ste. Marie car dealership.

The Crown had requested a sentence of two to three years.

The defence had argued that Bannon is suffering from serious liver problems and that such a sentence would be unfit for someone in his condition.

The Anishinabek police force provides policing services to 16 First Nation communities, stretching from Kettle and Stony Point First Nation in the south to Fort William First Nation in the north.
