Firefighters were still working to put out hot spots Monday evening after a three-alarm fire tore through an industrial building in Brampton.
Peel Regional Paramedic Services said one man– believed to be in his 40s -- sustained burns in the fire and was being treated for his injuries.
The fire also forced the evacuation of a neighbouring Maple Leaf plant.
At its height, 50 firefighters, including backup crews called form Pearson international Airport, battled the blaze at 98 Walker Drive, near Airport Road and Highway 407. In addition to fighting the flames, they doused water on chemical drums to keep them from catching fire.
The building houses a company called Empack, which produces "30 million cans of aerosol annually," the Brampton Fire Department said on its Twitter account. “According to Empack's website, the company has on-site liquid and gel products and keeps large amounts of chemical product on site."
The fire department also warned that anyone taking photos of the fire should stay far away when doing so, due to the risk of exposure to heavy smoke and chemicals.
It did not appear that any of the chemicals were burned in the fire. Sources at the scene told CTV the warehouse mainly stores hair care and home cleaning products.
Peel Regional Police said they had no information about chemicals stored in the warehouse.
"There is mention that there are chemicals stored in that warehouse … We're going to work with the fire department and do an investigation afterwards," Const. George Tudos told CP24.
A massive cloud of smoke could be seen from some distance away as the fire burned. At one point, crews battling the blaze reported a small explosion, but said the building's structural integrity was still intact.
