Police have charged five men in connection with a sex assault that took place New Year's Day in a downtown Toronto hotel room.

An officer with 51 Division told CTV News the suspects turned themselves in at a downtown police station at 6 a.m. Thursday -- less than 24 hours after police publicly released photos of five suspects wanted in the case.

The suspects were then released on $5,000 bail, and given the following restrictions:

  • 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew
  • No alcohol
  • No contact with the complainants

Det. Const. Melinda Askill, with the police's sex crimes unit, said investigators received several tips from the public after the photos were released.

Police say the men met two women at a New Year's Eve party at Exhibition Place. The group later left the party together, taking a taxi to the Marriott Hotel on Bloor Street, just east of Yonge Street, according to police.

The women, both in their 20s, filed a report with police on Jan. 1, saying they had been sexually assaulted in their hotel room sometime after 3 a.m.

Four suspects from Toronto and one suspect from Hamilton have been charged with two counts of gang sexual assault.

They are:

  • Rozbah Bahri, 27 years old
  • Parvez Bahri, 25 years old
  • Said Serwary, 23 years old
  • Ahmad Ghafari, 23 years old
  • Omed Sarwary, 23 years old

The suspects are expected to make a court appearance Thursday afternoon at College Park.

"It's going to be very aggressively defended. It's been devastating for their family and for them," said defence lawyer Lenny Hochberg.

"They come from good families (and have) no criminal records," he added. "They have a long haul ahead of them."
