A 26-year-old man is in hospital and five people are in custody after a late-night shooting in Ajax, Durham Regional Police say.

The shooting occurred at an address on Dreyer Drive, west of Pickering Beach Road, on Monday around 11:45 p.m.

In a news release, police said the victim and a relative were on the front porch of a home when they were approached by armed suspects.

The man was shot during an “exchange” with the suspects, who fled after the shooting.

Investigators do not believe the shooting was a random act.

Police said the victim was taken to Sunnybrook hospital in Toronto, where he is receiving care for non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers have arrested five people and recovered a firearm, police told CP24.
