Richmond Hill emergency crews were kept on their toes Friday morning when an apartment went up in flames shortly before 11 a.m.

Richmond Hill fire services received reports that the apartment at 8501 Bayview Ave., north of Highway 7, had caught fire at approximately 10:45 a.m.

Smoke could be seen billowing out of windows, and several people were reportedly stuck on their balconies during the incident.

York Regional Police said a unit on the third floor had caught fire, forcing an evacuation of the entire building.

A number of elderly people and people with disabilities live at the address, and some people had to be assisted out of the building by firefighters.

A local bus was brought to the scene to provide shelter from the heat, as officials investigated the cause of the fire.

The situation has been brought under control and that no injuries were reported.
