Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that tore through a community hall in Georgina, Ont., early Thursday morning.

Little remains of Egypt Community Hall, which one local resident called “the best and nicest hall in Georgina,” after it was gutted by a severe fire overnight.

In an email to CTV Toronto, resident Cathy Smockum said the hall was built by volunteers in the community, which is located just over an hour north of Toronto close to Lake Simcoe.

“There’s something going on there every weekend,” said Smockum, who estimated that replacing the building would cost close $1.5 million.

The hall was built in 1989 and it is owned by the Town of Georgina.
