Toronto-bound traffic from the west end of the GTA suffered major delays Tuesday morning as a fatal crash blocked a section of Highway 403 near the Dundas Street exit.

Ontario Provincial Police say a man and woman were driving towards Toronto at around 5 a.m. when their Chevy van veered out of control and flipped over the median that separates eastbound and westbound traffic.

The man, who police say was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the car. He was pronounced dead on the scene. The woman has been transported to Mississauga's Trillium hospital with serious injuries.

"The cause of the collision is under investigation," said OPP Const. Graham Williamson. "Many factors may have contributed to the collision. We're trying to determine what those factors were. It's still quite early in the investigation but any information we get from witnesses is extremely helpful."

The crash scene was expected to be cleared by 11 a.m. when officers complete their investigation and crews clean up the debris.

The accident affected traffic on roads around the highway for about five hours as most motorists take alternate routes to avoid the area. Traffic was heavily backed up around Highway 407, Dundas Street and Winston Churchill Boulevard.
