A review of 400-series highway speed limits is being promoted by Ontario Provincial Police Chief Julian Fantino.

Several ideas are being proposed for review, including a 105 km/h cap for trucks and raising the speed limit for passenger vehicles.

The posted limit on 400-series highways at this time is 100 km/h.

Fantino's request to review the speed limits is not meeting with resistance from Ontario's premier.

Dalton McGuinty said he has not spoken with Fantino about the ideas but added that the government is always trying to improve road safety.

"We have some of the safest roads in North America and those remain a work in progress," McGuinty said Tuesday morning.

"(We're) always going to continue to look at various options that we might have when it comes to improving safety."

When asked if McGuinty might include speed limit reductions in his climate change efforts, he said it might be a "natural fit."
