Accused sex killer Russell Williams, the former commander of CFB Trenton, made an elaborate but ultimately foiled suicide attempt this weekend, a newspaper report says.

The Kingston Whig-Standard said that sources at the Quinte Detention Centre in Napanee, Ont. said the colonel wrote a suicide note in mustard on the wall of his cell.

Sources said he wrote that his feelings are too much to bear.

Williams, 47, attempted to jam the lock to his cell door with cardboard in an attempt to prevent staff from saving him.

According to the newspaper, he stuffed a cardboard toilet roll stuffed with foil in his throat, in an effort to suffocate himself.

Staff members were able to get into his cell and save him.

Williams is now on 24-hour-suicide watch. His next court appearance is on April 29.

When reached by CTV Ottawa, officials at the detention centre would neither confirm nor deny the report of Williams' suicide attempt.

Williams' lawyer, Michael Edelson, would also not comment on the report. However, he told CTV Ottawa Monday that he is concerned about the leaks that are coming out of the detention centre. Edelson also said he does not plan to visit Williams this week.

Williams is accused of killing Jessica Lloyd, 27, and Cpl. Marie-France Comeau, 37, both from Eastern Ontario, in separate incidents. He is also accused of sexually assaulting two women from Tweed, Ont., the small town where Williams owns a lakeside cottage.
