Police from Durham region will be in Toronto on Tuesday, canvassing a North York neighbourhood for information about suspects believed to be involved in a double homicide earlier this year.
Authorities say they now have evidence that leads them to believe two men, Harjinder Singh Sandhu, 28, and Puneet Singh Chhina, 26, were shot to death in the Kennedy Road and Sheppard Avenue area before their bodies were dumped in Pickering.
The men's bodies were discovered in the trunk of a vehicle parked near Rosebank Road in Pickering on May 5, 2009.
Investigators described it as a slaying that had the markings of an organized crime hit.
Police say the men travelled from Brampton to meet a person, or a group of people, in the Kennedy and Sheppard area on May 4.
After the men were killed, their remains were taken in their vehicle to Pickering while a second vehicle followed.
Police say a cellphone belonging to one of the victims was left in the second vehicle. Investigators were somehow able to track that second car's route from Pickering, north to Whitchurch-Stoufville, then back south to North York.
Investigators say they have recovered DNA that they believe belongs to one of the suspects.
"Several persons have already consented to providing DNA samples and others will also be approached," police said in a news release.
In an effort to generate leads from the public, investigators will spend some time in the Kennedy and Sheppard area distributing posters and speaking to potential witnesses.
Sandhu, who is the father of two small children, was facing drug charges at the time of his murder. Chhina had never been in trouble with police, according to authorities.
