A 57-year-old Toronto pedestrian on crutches trying to cross Broadview Avenue at Danforth Avenue is dead after being struck by a dump truck.

"He was walking eastbound on Danforth on the south side. He was struck by an eastbound to southbound dump truck making a right hand turn," Sgt. Tim Burrows of the Toronto Police Service's traffic unit told ctvtoronto.ca on Friday.

The landmark at that intersection is a Pizza Pizza.

Burrows said they don't know yet whether the dead pedestrian was crossing on a walk light. The dump truck driver did stop, he said.

The accident happened at about 11:30 a.m. on a bright, sunny day. The roads in the area are dry and clean, Burrows said.

"Due to a collision investigation at Broadview & Dundas, there is no streetcar service between Broadview Station and Dundas. Shuttles are running," the TTC said in a bulletin posted to Twitter, a social messaging service.

The man is Toronto's sixth traffic fatality of 2010 and 11th in the GTA in the past 10 days.

Earlier Friday, a vehicle struck a woman on the ramp to the southbound Allen Expressway at Lawrence Avenue.

Paramedics took woman, estimated to be in her 30s, to Sunnybrook hospital. She is believed to have serious head injuries.

Both matters are under investigation and police are appealing for witnesses. Burrows said witnesses can call Traffic Services at 416-808-1900.

Traffic charges laid

On Jan. 12, a 28-year-old mother died when a car struck her as she crossed Martin Grove Road at Eglinton Avenue West, pushing a stroller containing her 12-week-old son.

Police announced Friday they have laid charges in connection with that incident, Toronto's second traffic fatality of 2010.

Edith Lucille Jones, 83, of Toronto has been charged with:

  • careless driving
  • failing to stop at a red light

She is scheduled to appear in court on March 11.
