Drugs and robbery are the motive behind the murder of a 22-year-old Toronto man who was shot while sitting inside his idling SUV.

Toronto police said at a news conference Thursday morning they have arrested one suspect but are looking for another in their investigation into the murder of Daniel Da Silva on Feb. 26.

The second suspect was also armed with a handgun, said Det. Sgt. Savas Kyriacou at the news conference.

Da Silva was shot several times at close range while sitting inside his BMW SUV with his friend.

The two men drove to an address on Municipal Drive and Eglinton Avenue West for an arranged meeting with two suspects. When Da Silva was shot, his passenger fled the scene along with the two suspects.

Da Silva's car was still running when he was shot and as a result, his vehicle sideswiped a building in a laneway and sat there idling until police found him slumped behind the wheel.

Da Silva has been described as a construction labourer not previously known to police and, according to neighbours, often came home at 3 a.m. and 4 a.m.

Kyriacou said surveillance camera footage was instrumental in helping police make an arrest.

"The images that the camera were able to capture were instrumental in bringing this case to an early conclusion," he said.

The suspect, who was arrested on Wednesday, has been charged with second-degree murder.
