Police are investigating a fatal carjacking Thursday afternoon after a man lost control of his car and crashed into a tree.

The collision, which left the front-end of the vehicle crumpled, happened just before 3:30 p.m. in the Midland Avenue and Finch Avenue East area in front of a Scarborough school, police said.

The 48-year-old man was pronounced dead on scene.

Police believe the Mazda was taken earlier Thursday afternoon, just blocks away from the scene of the collision.

Prior to the crash, police said the vehicle had struck a southbound Hyundai SUV on Midland Avenue. The driver then continued driving southbound before losing control of the car and slamming into a tree. The impact of the crash left debris scattered metres away from the scene.

Police said the crash was witnessed by Emergency Medical Services who were en route to a hospital with a different patient at the time.

Midland Avenue remains closed in both directions.

Police did not say when the road will reopen.
