A piece of scrap metal that flew through a car windshield appears to be responsible for the death of a man who was driving on the QEW Tuesday.

The driver, a 54-year-old man from Simcoe, was approaching the Evans Ave bridge on the Queen Elizabeth Way when a piece of scrap metal, the size of a license plate, fell from the back of a truck.

The object hit the windshield and the vehicle to slammed into the guardrail. No other vehicles were struck in the incident.

Paramedics pronounced the driver dead at the scene. No one else was in the car at the time.

The OPP are looking for a driver of the truck.

The eastbound lanes of the QEW were shut at the outset of the afternoon rush hour, creating massive delays.

Motorists were diverted onto Evans Avenue or the West Mall.
