An 18-year-old man is facing several charges in an alleged case of stunt driving in the city's west end Thursday afternoon.

Police say a driver was going 125 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on Humberline Drive, near Huddersfield Road - a primarily industrial area.

The driver has been charged with stunt driving, speeding, and racing.

His vehicle has been impounded and his licence has been suspended for seven days.

Fewer stunt driving cases in 2011

Traffic services Sgt. Tim Burrows said that significantly less people have been charged with stunt driving this year.

He said that 133 people were charged last year at this time, while there have only been 75 cases this year.

"Some of the rules have changed, and some of the laws have tightened up," he said.

Burrows said the biggest contributing factor to a reduction in these offences has been Ontario's stunt racing legislation, which was introduced in 2007.

"It's a great piece of legislation, the way it's written, we can address issues instantaneously," he said.

The legislation was highly criticized back in 2007 when it was ruled unconstitutional as it doesn't allow time for accused drivers to put forward a defence.

"Stunt driving is a serious public safety offence, and people with these behaviours - driving aggressively, failing to yield, speeding - are high-risk road users, and if you want to act like that on the road, these are the results," Burrows said.
