An empty lot is all that's left at the site that was once home to a one-room brick schoolhouse built in 1863.

The lot near Dufferin Street and Eglinton Avenue West was more recently home to the former Briar Hill Public School, opened in 1927, that the city was looking at declaring a heritage site.

The property was sold to developers Madison Homes instead, for approximately $6.3 million. That's about $1 million over its appraised value.

It's since been torn down to make way for a townhouse development.

Residents have complained that plans to tear down the old building should have gone through city council.

The executive director of Toronto Building has apologized, but not explained why the proper procedures weren't followed.
