A 61-year-old Toronto man has been charged with dangerous driving after a tractor-trailer flipped onto its side on Highway 427 during the busy rush home on Thursday, causing a massive traffic jam.

Witnesses told police a black BMW travelling south tried to pass on the shoulder in the collector lanes and then swerved across two lanes in the express lanes before colliding with the truck carrying a load of gravel.

The overturned truck blocked all southbound express lanes, near Dundas Street, at about 2:45 p.m.

Several other vehicles were hit in the subsequent chain reaction crash, but luckily no one was hurt, Ontario Provincial Police said.

Numerous vehicles were trapped behind the transport, while hundreds of motorists were eventually diverted into the collector lanes.

The stretch of highway was closed for several hours as crews worked to remove the truck and clean the scene.
