A 70-year-old man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after he was struck while riding his bicycle in Richmond Hill late Friday night.

The crash occurred near a Hindu temple on Bayview Avenue, north of Elgin Mills Road, just before 10 p.m.

York Regional Police said the cyclist was pulling out of the temple's entrance to cross Bayview when he was struck by a southbound car. The cyclist did not yield to traffic, said police.

The man, whose identity hasn't been released, was taken to Sunnybrook hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the car suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

Police are reminding cyclists to wear reflective clothing and obey the rules of the road.

The incident comes a day after Toronto police announced charges have been laid in the city's first cycling fatality of the year.

In that case, a 57-year-old was riding past a row of parked cars on Eglinton Avenue when a driver's door opened in front of him. The cyclist struck the door, fell onto the road and was hit by a truck. He died in hospital.

A 43-year-old woman has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with opening a vehicle door improperly.

Meanwhile, York police are asking witnesses to contact them or Crime Stoppers to assist in their investigation.
