TORONTO - Toronto FC dismissed interim head coach Chris Cummins on Tuesday, just days after a disappointing season was capped with a 5-0 drubbing in New York.

Cummins' contract was not renewed. The MLS club said the search is already underway for a new head coach.

"We would have loved to have kept Chris on as an assistant coach but he wants to be closer to his family," said director of soccer Mo Johnston. "We respect that, he's done a hell of a job.

"I think he's going to be a hell of a young coach one day."

Cummins' coaching record was eight wins, nine losses and seven draws in 24 matches. He was hired as an assistant coach in May 2008, taking over as interim head coach last April when John Carver stepped down.

"I was asked to do a job and I think I've done it to the best of my abilities, to be honest with you," Cummins said. "I honoured my contract, I was given a contract to the end of the year and I nearly lost my wife because she kept telling me to come home.

"But I'm a man of my word and when I say I'm going to do something, I honour my contract."

The team hopes to have a new head coach in place by the start of pre-season in February.

Toronto FC was in the post-season mix until the final weekend of the regular season. The team finished with a record of 10-11-9.
