A couple was charged after they were caught engaging in sexual intercourse on Toronto's transit system in the middle of the day on Sunday.

TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said that a passenger activated the assistance alarm on the subway when a man and a woman started having sex on the southbound train.

When the train stopped the couple continued their amorous activity on the southbound platform of Spadina Station at about 2:30 p.m.

Police and transit control were notified and attended the scene, Ross said.

Ross said that the couple was transported to hospital because of what appeared to be extreme intoxication.

Ross said that this type of activity has happened before but he doesn't see reports too often.

"It is a big system and if people are so inclined they can get carried away," he said.

"We encourage people very much in love like that to find somewhere private."

The two were charged with engaging in a lewd act.
