TORONTO - A maintenance contractor faces five charges after a plunging elevator injured five passengers in downtown Toronto last January.

The Technical Standards and Safety Authority charged Fujitec Canada Inc. with five counts of violating safety requirements.

Three men and two women were injured when the hydraulic elevator they were in tumbled several stories to a parking garage below in an office building.

An investigation determined that a major loss of hydraulic fluid, resulting from the failure of the elevator's single bulkhead cylinder, caused the elevator to drop.

Fujitec Canada Inc. is charged with failing to inspect and examine the elevator at regular intervals, failing to repair or replace worn or defective components and failing to maintain a proper log book.

The case is scheduled to be heard in court on Feb. 28.
