A young man who scaled the wall of a Brantford, Ont. building and entered a stranger's apartment was "very polite," residents say.

The strange incident was reported at approximately 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Brantford, Ont., a city approximately 100 kilometres southwest of Toronto.

A caller told police that a man was seen climbing outside of the Beckett Adult Leisure Centre, located on Bain Street.

"The male was observed to climb onto a third floor balcony and enter the apartment," Brantford police wrote in a statement Wednesday.

Officers were told that a resident of the apartment was home at the time, and witnessed an unknown man walking into the apartment through the balcony door. The man walked through the unit, and exited through the front door.

The young man knocked on the third-floor balcony door, resident Sherry Murphy told CTV Kitchener on Wednesday.

"He just said he needed some help... and my friend let him in the apartment."

Hugh Dore, the friend who had been visiting at the time, opened the door and let the stranger into the residence.

"He said, 'There's some guys over there chasing me. I just want to come through,'" Dore said.

"He was very polite, offering to take his shoes off and saying 'please.'"

He did not take anything from the residence, police said.

The officers called to the scene said they'd spoken with Murphy and Dore, but were not actively investigating the case. Even if the man was found, there was no criminal activity to be investigated, they said.
