TORONTO - Toronto city council has voted in favour of a motion to rename a midtown park after a police officer who was killed when he was run over by a stolen snowplow.

Coun. Adam Vaughan made the motion to rename the Dupont Parkette on Avenue Road after Sgt. Ryan Russell.

It's now up to the Toronto and East York community council to approve the name change.

Police Chief Bill Blair says the family is grateful for the idea.

Russell was killed Jan. 12 trying to stop the stolen snowplow, which had led police on a chase through the city's snowy streets.

Richard Kachkar, 44, is charged with first-degree murder in Russell's death.
