Canadian Forces Sgt. Robert Giblin stabbed his newlywed wife before the two plummeted to their deaths from the balcony of their west-end apartment, Toronto police have confirmed.

Emergency crews were called to an apartment at 111 Raglan Avenue, in the Bathurst Street and St. Clair Avenue West area, around 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Responders found Giblin and his 33-year-old wife Precious Charbonneau dead outside the apartment building after what police are now calling a murder-suicide.

Residents told paramedics the pair had fallen from a balcony on the building's 21st floor, where they lived together.

In a statement released Monday afternoon, police said Giblin stabbed Charbonneau multiple times prior to the fall. Police believe Charbonneau was pregnant at the time.

“Investigators believe Robert Giblin was responsible for the Homicide of Precious Charbonneau and are not pursuing any more suspects in this matter,” the statement said.

Giblin joined the Canadian Forces in 1997, a Department of National Defence spokesperson confirmed on Monday.

He was based out of the Denison Armoury in Toronto, and was deployed on HMCS Regina in 2003 and served in Afghanistan in 2005 and 2007.

"The loss of any soldier is devastating to the military community," DND spokesperson Lonny Kates said in an emailed statement. "Our thoughts and condolences go out to Sgt. Robert Giblin's family and friends."

Kates said the department could not comment further on Giblin's death, as the Toronto Police Homicide Unit is still investigating the incident.
