Additional charges filed in relation to Calgary house explosion

Charges have been filed against a Calgary man and woman, the owners of a home that exploded and burned down in Monterey Park last year.

On Oct. 4, at around 11:05 p.m., police responded to calls to the 100 block of Las Americas Villas N.E. for reports of a residential fire that was believed to have started with an explosion inside a residence.

The fire spread quickly to neighbouring residences, injuring several people.

Fire crews extinguished the blaze and worked in tandem with police officers to determine what caused it

Police believe a man and woman intentionally set a fire within their home using accelerant, which caused the explosion and then the subsequent fire.

The man was previously charged with arson – disregard for human life. He has now also been charged with arson – damage to property of others and possession of incendiary material.

He’s scheduled to appear in court Feb.4.

A 43-year-old Calgary woman has been charged as well, with arson – disregard for human life, arson – damage to property of others and possession of incendiary material.

She is scheduled to appear in court on Feb.3.
