The quick actions of bystanders are being credited for saving the life of a young boy after he was hit and pinned under a car on Saturday.
The incident occurred around 1 p.m. on Thorncliffe Park Drive, near Millwood Road and Overlea Boulevard.
Police said a nine-year-old darted onto the street in front of a parked bus. An elderly woman who was trying to pass the bus struck the boy, who became trapped under the vehicle.
A group of bystanders, including two Toronto police officers, rushed to the scene of the accident and managed to lift the car off the boy.
“We heard it but then we ran right over and saw the young child stuck under the car,” Det. Const. Craig McFarquhar told CTV Toronto. “A bunch of us…lifted the car and tried to get it off the kids as soon as possible.”
McFarquhar’s partner said adrenaline kicked in when he heard the boy’s screams.
Police said the boy suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, including cuts, burns and possibly some broken bones.
Police have not said if charges will be laid against the driver.
