A 25-year-old man from Burlington, Ont., has been charged in connection to an early morning crash Friday on Highway 403 in Mississauga that left two people dead.

The victims were travelling westbound on the highway around 4:30 a.m. when their Toyota Corolla was struck by a pickup truck heading the wrong way near Eglinton Avenue, Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Dave Woodford said.

The occupants of the Corolla were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are not yet releasing the names of the victims - a 48-year-old from Woodbridge, Ont., and a 45-year-old from Toronto - at the request of their families.

The crash mangled the car so badly that firefighters could not remove the bodies at the scene, Woodford told reporters at the scene.

"It's very tragic. I've never seen a vehicle that you can't even tell what it is," Woodford said.

The driver of the pickup was taken to Credit Valley Hospital with minor injuries before he was charged.

OPP officers were on their way to the area after they received reports from motorists that a pickup truck was travelling the wrong way.

The accident occurred before officers could reach the pickup.

All westbound lanes of the highway were re-opened after being closed for several hours for the investigation.

The driver of the pick up, John Bakai, will appear in court on Saturday to face two counts each of criminal negligence causing death, impaired driving casing death and exceeding the blood-alcohol limit while driving, causing a fatality.
