Peel Police are investigating the region's fifth homicide of the year after a man was found shot dead in his Brampton home.

Police were called to a reported shooting at a home on Wickstead Court around 10:44 p.m. Saturday night. They found a 23-year-old male mortally wounded in the garage.

Emergency medical services tried to revive the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim has been identified as Darren McLean. McLean's friends say he worked as a forklift operator at a warehouse but aspired to be a rap artist. A friend, who wished not to be identified, said he was supposed to go to a recording studio with McLean Saturday night, but could not reach him.

Another friend, Vince Nunziato, described McLean as "a good kid."

"He wasn't involved in anything bad. It's sad."

Friends and neighbours say McLean lived at the home with his mother and sister. All police will confirm is that a family member discovered McLean in the garage and called 911.

A post-mortem had been scheduled for Sunday.

Homicide investigators are interviewing potential witnesses and are asking anyone with information to call them at 905-453-2121, ext. 3205. Anonymous tips can also be called in to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
