A Brampton man is facing charges after a serious crash on Steeles Avenue. The incident began early Monday morning, police say, when they suspected a driver was impaired and tried to pull him over.

Const. Thomas Ruttan of the Peel Police said the incident began about 1:15 a.m.  Police pursued the suspect vehicle, which had been seen exiting a parking lot at Dean Street and Kennedy Road.

They ended the chase after witnessing the driver engage in some very careless manoeuvres, Ruttan said, adding Peel police policy is to call off pursuits if officers feel it is causing a risk to public safety.

A few minutes after the pursuit ended, police received a call about a collision on Steeles Avenue. The SUV had struck a car, leaving the driver of that vehicle with minor injuries, Ruttan said.

The SUV's driver fled the scene, but police were able to make an arrest.

Kevin Fareez Gayadeen, 26, faces the following charges:

  • impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm
  • driving over .08 causing bodily harm
  • dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • failing to remain at the scene of an accident
  • flight from police
  • driving while under suspension

Ruttan said Gayadeen was scheduled to appear in a Brampton courtroom on Monday.

No allegations against Gayadeen have been proven in a court of law.
